Not always. Some relatives and trusted adults provide care without becoming licensed. Others choose to become licensed to access additional financial support, training and resources. Our team can help you understand what may apply to your situation. 

Support may be available depending on your family's situation and eligibility. Licensed relative and kinship caregivers receive the full daily rate the child qualifies for, and additional support may include childcare assistance, medical coverage and other community resources.

No. Many kinship caregivers rent, live in apartments or have other living arrangements. What matters most is providing a safe environment that meets a child's needs, not owning a home. 

No. Licensing focuses on safety, not perfection. Simple safety requirements help create a safe home for children, and if your home doesn't meet every requirement right away, our team will explain what's needed and help you through the process. In some situations, waivers may also be available. 

Every family's situation is different. While timelines vary, temporary licenses are often issued quickly so families can begin accessing benefits while completing the remaining licensing steps.
